Camp Beausite NW, originally known as the NW Kiwanis Camp, has been providing camp services to adults and children with disabilities for over 25 years. We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization funded through donations from individuals, groups, organizations, businesses; fund raising activities; camper fees; facility rentals; foundation grants; and support services from the Department of Health and Human Services for individual campers, who are eligible for coverage.

The Beginning

Camp Beausite first opened its tent flaps in 1989. The camp was started by a Kiwanis Club in Sequim, Wa., to give children with a disabilities the opportunity for a camp experience. In the beginning, the camp did not have a permanent site. Between 1989 and 1992 camp sessions were held at various campgrounds around the Olympic Peninsula.

Growth

In 1993, four more Kiwanis Clubs joined the original group and the Northwest Kiwanis Camp was incorporated with the goal of locating, acquiring, and developing a permanent camp site. That same year, Jefferson County offered the group a long term lease on a 55 acre wooded track, which included a 22 acre lake in Chimacum, Wa. At the time, the site included a 5,000 square foot lodge and a caretaker's cottage.

Recognizing the need for a name that better reflected the growth in the scope of the services we provide and the diversity of our supporters, the organization officially changed its name to Camp Beausite Northwest in 2011.

Site Improvements

Extensive improvements have been made to the site over the years to bring it up to code and to expand facility services. In June 2009, the 1st phase of the expansion plan was completed. This phase included the construction of an 1100 square foot bathroom/shower/laundry facility. In 2016 we remodeled our kitchen in the lodge to make it a commercial kitchen. We are currently working on Phase II, the construction of two bunkhouses, which will lodge 40 people total. This phase is scheduled to be completed in June 2017. Phase III, scheduled for completion in 2018, will be a remodel of our current lodge. And Phase IV will be the construction of a garage/shop/storage unit scheduled for completion in 2019-2020.
